ARTEMIS II Mission

Thank you for the update!

Do Horizons ID#'s or TLEs exist for any of them yet?

I don’t expect them to be on JPL Horizons.

I have been looking for info on the 4 cube sats and found info on 2:

Atenea has been active, but no word on orbit raise:

The Argentine satellite ATENEA marked a milestone in aerospace history by establishing communication 70,000 kilometers from Earth, following its launch on the Artemis II mission . According to the National Commission for Space Activities (CONAE), the first contact occurred at 00:58 on Thursday, April 2nd.

In spanish here:

Less luck for K-RadCube:

K-RadCube, a South Korean nanosatellite launched aboard the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) crewed lunar exploration program Artemis II, has failed to establish normal communication, although some signals were received.

I have used Dillon Shropshire his TLE, which is on the Seesat e-mailing list:

First try on fitting that TLE to my data:

I have set some vaues manually, because the auto fit gets stuck. The residual is 42 Hz:
70055 2216.497921 0.042 1858-11-16T00:00:00 0794 26093.017500 197

The resulting TLE I have now is:

Artemis II TLI
1 70055U 26000A 26093.01750000 .00000000 00000-0 00000-0 0 01
2 70055 28.7714 352.5654 9682267 82.1126 356.4194 0.12500000 08
# 20260403.01-20260403.09, 197 measurements, 0.042 kHz rms

The size of the orbit is:
-1009 x 326195 km

A bit short to reach the moon. Maybe the Mean Motion should be lower.

Doing a zoom out of this TLE gives:

The frequency should drop while observing (red part), but should rise from day to day. Of course this TLE is an ellipse and not the figure 8 path. At day 4 things will be off, but that is the limitation of a TLE.

In the NASA press conference it was just mentioned, that all 4 CubeSats have been successfully separated. However, communication was only established with the cubesat from Saudi Arabia and Argentina.

from Jonathan: The Artemis II cubesats TACHELES, SWC-1 and K-RADCUBE have now been identified on Space-Track. ATENEA was not cataloged, and was expected to have reentered at first perigee since it didn’t have a propulsion system to raise its orbit. K-RADCUBE may also have reentered, and is reported to have failed

Indeed. Space track shows:

Only SWC-1 from Saudi Arabi appears to have raised its orbit. But the TLE’s are a day or two old.

Received Artemis again last night. The signal was very strong and only shows a slow Doppler. It appears to switch frequency for a short bit, maybe due to locking and unlocking to a grond station? At around 03:00 it reduced intensity a lot, as can also been seen on the Amsat live stream.

I have used the 68538 TLE of Space track:

0 ARTEMIS 2 (INTEGRITY)
1 68538U 26069A 26092.98100440 -.00030777 16879-4 00000+0 0 9997
2 68538 28.1492 354.5431 9814905 83.2597 352.5489 0.07782040 18

Which fits very nice:

can you share the IQ raw file of this obs. interest to replay using strf on my pc. :star_struck:

Well done, I need to check my STRF again, I didn’t find any signals yet.

Weaker than weak and only visible for a few minutes, but another sighting of the S-Band downlink w/ the 1-meter dish from around 327,000 Km

One needs some luck to get the surpise to see the signal! Two nights ago I was out of luck. The strong winds had tilted the elevation up, and the pointing of the dish was off track. I use a “fixed” pointing of about 8 degrees elevation heading south.

Last night was full of surprises. I was surprised that I received the signal while the space craft is getting close to the Moon. And I was lucky that they used some transmit modes with a strong carrier for a short period while Integrity was in my beam. I used a smaller bin size of 25 Hz instead of the 100Hz I used earlier, because the Doppler change is slowing. I have tuned the colors of the plot to bring out the signal:

Next luck is that Space Track published another TLE:

0 ARTEMIS 2 (INTEGRITY)
1 68538U 26069A 26095.31257403 -.00058714 21969-3 00000+0 0 9995
2 68538 56.3581 51.2608 9964302 34.1676 95.2444 0.11783130 15

Another surprise is the inclination. It has changed from 28 to 56 degrees. Apparently the flight path is more dynamic then I thought!

This TLE fits nice to the data:

The RMS error is only 27Hz. But the updated TLE does not fit the earlier period when it was close to Earth and had just performed the TLI burn:

Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

Not to waste space in this very interesting discussion, but how much would we all give to be in a position to see that S-Band carrier pop back up on the screen after they finish passing behind the moon?? What a moment!

Fun to see a bit of the S-Band downlink so soon after Artemis-II left lunar orbit tonight. 1-hour waterfall.

Any updates regarding the CubeSats on Artemis-2, signals, or did they burn up?

Had a fairly long-duration track last night (U.S. time) and even caught what was probably a momentary drop in lock to a ground station before re-syncing with another station! Wish I had been watching in real-time to monitor which DSN station(s) were active when that happened. Anyway, signal should just keep getting stronger now.

I think it is your spectrum that is on fire! Love seeing your signals! Congrats!

For me it is a struggle. Two nights back, the loud carrier was transmitted at the wrong moments. My fixed pointing dish is looking in between some houses. Last night the sdr had some sort of hick up. There are samples but the spectrum is empty, as if the antenna was not connected. A reboot fixed it. Coming night promises more trouble, elevation is only 5 degrees.
