Observation 150869: FOX-1A (40967) - FoxTelem?

Regarding Observation 150869

here’s the telemetry I received on SR1GEO_RACK01 ground station:

E3 1C 70 5E 9E 0E 31 2B 2B EB 22 8A 81 3C 3C A7 9D 9B 9B A7 D1 9E 27 E5 C8 34 DF 3B CB 9D 50 0C 97 33 03 25 C9 06 F2 98 FD 00 7F FF EA 54 30 E2 AC 23 2A 9A FA 89 B4 2C F6 C2 81 3E 3C 6D 01 0D

I installed FoxTelem in hopes to decode the data, but it takes sound files. I wasn’t able to download the sound file either.

I gave it to FoxTelem, and I got:

I used sox without argument to convert ogg to wav

So did you feed FoxTelem the voice file? If so, how do you save it from the console?
Or, did you feed it the raw data?

Does FoxTelem let you know what you are looking at? I’m assuming it’s a time stamp and a bunch of sensor readings.

I have used your .ogg voice file:

  • downloaded from your observation
    https://network.satnogs.org/observations/150869/
  • converted to wav without any option using sox,
  • loaded into FoxTelem,
  • selected DUV (Data Under Voice) and AF,
  • FoxTelem reads all,
  • and got the 2 screenshots with readings.

I guess there could be some simple relationship between what you have decoded
and what FoxTelem got but I still do not see it (Hex, KISS format, any?).

Great! I did not see the button on the lower-left to download the audio file.
$sox audiofilename.ogg audiofilename.wav

Nice! The first pane loads the wav file and analyzes it.

The second pane is satellite specific – there are three sub-panes:

This is the second sub-pane:

The third sub-pane:

YAY … thanks for the lesson!

You are welcome
I am discovering too.

Do you identify interesting things (what are these resets, what are
the units of uptimes…)?

There’s a documentation of these values available - I don’t know if I am allowed to upload this in here.
But there’s also a current documentation in the source code of foxtelem.

Thanks for these instructions. I just used them to on Fox-1D and successfully decoded them using FoxTelem. My FoxTelem automatically uploads it, but perhaps SatNOGs already uploads the telemetry to AMSAT? If not, it would be great to get this functionality added.

Uptime appears to be seconds since the last re-boot. Notice the uptime has moved forward about 14-15 secs between reports. Fox-1A was launched Oct 8, 2015, so the total seconds since then is 1,398,240+ But uptime is less than that figure. It’s either uptime rolled over or the satellite has rebooted since.

I agree. Does the SatNOGS decode process the data far enough so that it can be uploaded to AMSAT?

–Konrad, WA4OSH

It’s probably better to leave pointers at things rather than uploading everything. IMHO, that would fill the forum very quickly with huge documents

No link to point at, I am sorry…

Sorry they are not on the Internet somewhere where they can be linked to.

I’m not an admin. Maybe the Gallery would be a good place to post the documentation for the satellites that use FoxTelem. I think it would be really good to save the procedure on how to decode the telemetry somewhere so that other people can try it too.

Perhaps @saintaardvark @fredy @pierros @akef or @elkos … have a better idea.

I think that the wiki could be more suitable, maybe?
But if people that are more experienced with documenting stuff have other suggestions.

A new section Operate/“Decoding data using FoxTelem” would be convenient, I think.

Since there is a DUV decoder in gr-satnogs this is not very useful in my opinion.

@n5fxh @elkos @Joanna I’m certainly experienced in writing Wikipedia articles. I would love to contribute a section(s) under Operate – Decode Telemetry and Packets, and then open-up into sections that correspond to satellite(s)/series and their various transponders.

Could you please point me to the DUV decoder (because I did not get much out of seeing the raw data above)?

–Konrad, WA4OSH

Sorry, I missunderstood that!
There’s no parser that outputs human readable values.

Yes … so @n5fxh Francois-Xavier showed me how to download the ogg audio, convert it to a .wav file and import into FoxTelem and see everything in human readable form.

I did not want to lose how to do that and bury it here in this one observation. If there’s an initial consensus, I will start adding a section called “Decode Telemetry and Packets” under Operate as my contribution back into a very nice system.
