Hello,
I am the one in charge of the COSMIC satellite, and I would like to share a few updates about the mission.
Although COSMIC is specified to use both S-band and UHF, we are currently operating only on S-band. If we reach a point where UHF will be used, we will inform this community in advance.
At the moment, the satellite’s beacon is turned off. We are sending telecommands only when the satellite passes over South Korea, and we verify the satellite’s status through the downlink responses triggered by those telecommands.
We plan to re-enable the beacon once the situation becomes more stable, and when we do, it will also operate on S-band. We will notify the community before making this change.
Thank you for your continued efforts to receive the satellite’s signal. Your support is greatly appreciated.
We have been using OBJECT J so far when attempting to communicate with the satellite. Each time, we did receive a response to our telecommands. However, the signal strength has been much weaker than expected, and—more importantly—the signal only appears near the pass’s max elevation, regardless of whether the overall elevation is low or high.
Because of this unusual pattern, we are now considering the possibility that COSMIC may actually correspond to a different OBJECT. The fact that the signal does not gradually improve with increasing elevation, but instead shows up only near the max elevation of each pass, is something we find quite strange.
Also in case, you’ll be able to enable beaconing either in UHF or S-band, let us know as we maybe able to help with observations to locate and identify the object.
I would like to share a quick update on the COSMIC satellite.
The beacon transmission has now been re-enabled.
At the moment, the beacon is being transmitted only on S-band, with a center frequency of 2249.51 MHz.
For tracking and observations, we are currently using NORAD ID 66658 (OBJECT J).
If you are monitoring this object and the frequency above, you should now be able to receive the beacon signal.
We will share further updates if there are any changes to the beacon configuration.
Thank you again for your continued support and observations.
Hi, our satellite is currently not transmitting its beacon again.
Therefore, I’m sorry to say that you won’t be able to receive any signal at the moment.
Thank you very much for always trying to help us—we truly appreciate your support.
