CUTE Satellite Re-Entry with a Decodable Goodbye Song

Hi all,

I am an operations graduate student at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP). We at LASP have a sad announcement: the Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment (CUTE) mission is de-orbiting by July 21st.

It only has a week left, so similar to CIRBE Satellite Re-entry with a Decodable Goodbye Song and Request to add CTIM to Satnogs DB - #15 by LASP_SmallSatOps , CUTE will be singing a song! It’s another stop on the “LASP SmallSatellite Eras Tour”… this era was all about catching stray glimpses of exoplanets lit by far-off stars.

CUTE has been operating since it launched in September 2021 and has faithfully fulfilling its science mission ever since. CUTE is LASP’s longest-ever operating CubeSat, having lasted nearly 5 years. CUTE is still healthy and could have still been taking transit science, if it wasn’t for Solar Maximum thickening the atmosphere. Last year, it was estimated that CUTE may re-enter by July of 2025. We began Low-Drag operations and managed to buy ourselves an extra year of useful lifetime. Unfortunately, the Sun and the atmosphere always eventually win, so CUTE is nearing the end.

If you’re a space enthusiast without a station of your own, feel free to take a look here: the SatNOGs Database has a number of observations from community members.

Please reply here if you’re able to catch some of the farewell song, and see if you can guess what song it is!

I wonder who will get to hear the last packet from CUTE. Cute has a good reliable signal over my QTH, going to miss it.

From the latest TLE, it looks like that is gonna re-enter much earlier than 21st of July.

Let’s try to track it as best as we can!

Probably the lower part of its orbit

1km above periapsis, guessing reentry will be in the next couple hours.

Updated CUTE TLE from SatNOGS DB and altitude is 151km and dropping and it looks like Gpredict broke because its not showing the satellite on the map anymore. Edit: now at 147km and dropping still.

CUTE has now been re-entered. The last good observation was over Antarctica by 3804 - DP0GVN-UHF station:

Congratulation to the satellite team for their successful mission!

Also a big thank you to all the stations participated in tracking this re-entry!

anybody got the song?

Unfortunately, I did not copy the songs. I searched for ASCII strings in the beacon but couldn’t find any strings.
