SpaceX F9 Transporter-7 - 2023-04-15 06:47 UTC

These mass deployments are a mixed blessing… was hoping to verify the modulation + framing & get some decodes from Vigoride-6 around 400.524 but there were something like 8 satellites transmitting on top of each other. Until these things spread out, it’s going to take some luck to confirm the proper settings to decode them all. We only need one good packet, but it needs to be singing solo.

I’m trying to receive Sateliot-0 and TAIFA-1 signal but no luck so far. I see you’re also unable to receive their signal. What could be the reason ?

Hi D4KRN and welcome to the community,

Thanks for confirming that you haven’t received those two satellites.

There could be several reasons for a satellite not to transmit, a list of some we have seen in the past:

  1. Failed antenna deployment,
  2. Dead On Arrival (DOA) due to extreme launch conditions (vibrations etc)
  3. No sufficient power to transmit
    • Satellite in sleep mode until it charges its batteries
    • Satellite batteries are dead
  4. Software issues, for example satellite is on reboot loop state
  5. Satellite transmits only over specific area
  6. Satellite transmits only after ground station command (command not given or communication with ground station has issues)
  7. Low power transmissions that can not easily received.

EDIT: As in some of the cases above the satellite sooner or later will transmit, we keep trying to receive it for a couple more days.

With the addition of the 2023-054xxx objects to Celestrak TLEs, we finally have something official to work with.

The Celestrak admin has even run something at his disposal to start trying to match up objects:

Okay awesome. We’re interested in doing the TLE update step ourselves using SatNOGS data—is it possible to download observations? On most observations I just see the .png waterfall and the audio data available for download. Thank you!

Hello! Thanks for updating the TLE. We have another new estimate:

Is there some better way for us to formally request TLE updates? I was able to suggest adding a different logo/links to the Sapling Giganteum page, but did not immediately see a way to edit the TLE.

Thank you!

Here are TLE sets from space-track.org, there are 38 TLE sets for 36 deployed satellites, probably the 2 extra are either deployed satellites from deployers or parts of the rocket. TLE sets are still TBA (To Be Assigned) so before any identification we need to wait to be assigned. Some of them may describe more than one objects.

@KN6HCC

Thank for the TLE set, unfortunately there isn’t currently another way to request new TLE set used than writing here. With TLE set published by space-track.org, let me know if any of these TLE sets is better to follow for now.

Suggestions in SatNOGS DB for the satellites have been reviewed and approved.

What do you mean by download observations, do you mean IQ? If yes, unfortunately is not possible. Currently waterfall png, audio and data, if exist, are what you can get from the observations.

Wow! you guys can calculate TLEs independently? that’s really awesome!!!

But anyway, we didn’t manage yet to establish communication with the satellite, our radio ham friend ground station has low power and he had configuration issues. We will ask help from the community if we get desperate.

But anyway, we didn’t do power budget calculations, so we put 3 minutes out of abundance of caution. What sort of time would you need? anyway, it’s not possible to command the satellite yet. but we will consider if it helps so much

@fredy Thanks for putting together that ‘Celestrack transporter matches’ chart, I was trying to make sense of how ‘56185’ could possibly be CIRBE when Celestrak posted that yesterday. Based on our STRF observations, 56188 still seems to be best. Early on SSS-2B (56186) seemed to be a 2nd place candidate but has since fallen to an rms of > 0.500 kHz.

Now that there are published TLE sets from space-track.org we don’t need it so much, the next period of need will be close to re-entry, which I hope is far in the future for your mission.

Anyway, the answer to your question is as frequent as possible. Theoretically for the LEO orbits we have usually 8-12min passes over the stations and we need at least 3 received singals. In most cases the stations can not receive from 0 degree elevation, so 1-4min could go without reception, in other words in worst case scenario of an 8min pass with 4min no-reception we need 3 signals in 4min = ~1 signal per minute. However I think a frequency of 1 signal per 1.5min or 2min could work too.

It looks like that 4 days were enough to change the orbits and mix the satellites’ order since deployment.

I see that with the latest update from Celestrak, quite a few of these objects have been deemed worthy of a final designation:

Looking at the following observation there seem to be 3 satellites using frequencies around 400.500.

If somebody knows more about the modulation used by satellites around 400.5 and could share this information, it will be easier to differentiate.

The object ID’s in the image are a indication and not definite yet.

Hi Jan!

The 40k-wide signal centered on 400.500 appears to be Tomorrow-R1 @ 38k4. I have not been able to get a clean enough signal to decode, but ONE SatNogs observation did:

The less-frequent 40k-wide signal at 400.524 appears to be (probably) 38k4 from Vigoride-6, but neither I nor any of the SatNogs observations have been able to get a decode because of all the transmitters so close together this early after deployment.

Of course this all gets easier when they spread out.
