Paris Observatory Ground Station

Hello,

I’m a student and I do an Internship at Observatoire de Paris. The goal of this instership is to build a ground station and use SatNOGS. I use a computer (Debian strech) to lead my ground station and I’ve some problems. In this topic I will post every problem I will encounter during the installation of the ground station.

The first one is:
When I follow instructions on the wiki : SatNOGS Client Ansible - SatNOGS Wiki

The installation of the software seems to proceed normally, there is no error, but when I try to run: “journalctl -u satnogs-client.service”
The line " * Running on http://0.0.0.0:5000/ (Press CTRL+C to quit) " does not appear.
And then, when I try to run localhost:5000 in my browser I obtain the page here.

Thank you for help

Why do you want to use a computer instead of a raspberry ?
We are here to help

Because, the idea is to provide to the Paris Observatory the possibility to use 2 modes for the reception.
First: SatNOGS mode used for all satellites available on SatNOGS and be part of the larger SatNOGS community.

Second: A local mode used to manage the futures Satellites deployed by the Paris Observatory for example or simply having a second way of receiving the satellites.

@freyhr : You can also use it like this with a raspberry, because the satnogs client will share by default on the network a rigctrl interface. This enables you to use the rotator over the network (including gpredict for example). And about the SDR you can use a SoapyServer to share it over the network, or also you can use coax switch to use another networked SDR with TX capability when you go standalone. You can also use a coax switch to use a regular TRX with built in TNC for example.

Looks good to me!
Did you do the configuration already?
As a hint: if someone asks you for your current setup: please remove you API key! Don’t post it on the internet!

Yes, my configuration is complete, but I’m on the Paris Observatory network. Do you think it’s possible that the firewall prevents me to connect my ground station to SatNOGS network. It’s really weird because I’ve the interface on localhost:5000 but I can’t do anything on it the page freeze immediately. And as you can see here some observations do not start.

Hm, interesting: I can see some good observations in there!
Could you please paste the output of

$ journalctl -u satnogs-client.service | tail -n 100

?

It’s really complicate for us to use a raspberry pi because we want to add the possibility to receive satellites in S band in the future and the raspberry can’t do that no ?

Yes of course !

Yes, for the observation at 10:45:42 (08:45:42 UTC) I’ve an error message because the rotor is not connected yet but there is no problem the result is send. However for the observation programmed at 10:52:01 (08:52:01 UTC) as you can see on the output there is no observation running. Have you an idea why my station receives some orders but not others ?

Thank you for your answer so fast

Unfortunately I have no idea! Are there any errors in the logs (apart from the rotator control stuff, this is to be ignored for now!) when an observation is not executed?

No I have no other errors in the logs apart the problem cited above concerning the localhost:5000 which doesn’t work. The light is always red as I could not communicate with the network. Do you know the internet protocols used by the SatNOGS Network, or maybe a port is inaccessible for me ? I would love to know more about how to communicate between my station and the Network. Maybe it’s just a port that is closed to the observatory and that does not allow me to communicate with the outside ?

Just once I had an error that told me that the connection with the port 5011 was refused. However, I did not see it after.

Everything but the missing uploads looks ok to me!
The “orange” circle shows you’re in “Testing Mode” afaik! So everything on your local client webinterface also looks fine! There’s not much to show…

All connections should be https requests, so nothing special there…

Yes but the red light here should not be green ?

Network says it is online - in testing mode!

Yes it’s true so I do not understand why some commands do not work
