I’ve used GIMP. I hadn’t changed the colormap but playing with the color levels.

If you manage to get good contrast or visibility using GIMP, please let us know your settings

here mine:

1. download the waterfall png image and open with gimp
2. click colors - levels…
3. choose Logarithmic histogram
   
   
4. move the left slider (input levels) until near the first higher bar
   
   
5. back to the waterfall, it should more clear.
6. look start from 300s (the picture here is not clear, because the image quality reduced when i upload here)
