Need help setting up a GS using Eggbeater antenna for receiving Earth/weather images

Hello guys, just a newbie here asking for guidance/help for my project.

I am working on setting up a ground station to receive weather images from NOAA satellites and intend to use a DIY-built Eggbeater antenna for this purpose. Due to constraints, purchasing a ready-made setup kit is not an option, so I plan to construct the antenna entirely from scratch.

While I have access to resources and guides for other antenna types, my project specifically aims to serve as a proof-of-concept using the Eggbeater design. Once complete, I plan to rebuild and adapt the antenna for other frequency bands, such as UHF.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance, technical insights, construction tips, or reference materials related to building and optimizing a DIY Eggbeater antenna for satellite reception.

Hi. All the very best in your attempt. But letting you know NOAA 19 has reached EoL and NOAA 15 is going to be turned off by next week.

Hey dvdiyen,
Thank you for the heads up, its really helpful.
Also can you please let me know of any alternatives to get images from any other sources (except Geostationary satellites).
I would really appreciate your insights.

Also note that many antennas are single band, some wider than others. And if you build a VHF eggbeater you will be better off building a separate for UHF rather than adjusting/rebuilding the VHF one.

Common (omni-ish) antennas used here:

  • monopole
  • multiband vertical (cots)
  • qfh
  • turnstile
  • eggbeater
  • short yagi pointing straight up

Additional things that will improve reception, requirements depends heavily on your RF environment etc:

  • antenna location
  • LNA
  • filter
  • decent coax
  • chokes
  • metal enclosures

Just build an Eggbeater for UHF and the results are very good.

Both my 431 and 2173 SatNOGS groundstations are connected to it.

Good luck with your setup and feel free to ask further questions.

Hey Jan Gills,
Big fan of your work.
And also the Antenna looks awesome, I do need to ask for a favor if you could please share any Guides, Schematics, documents that you have referred to or any documents of your Eggbeater project that i can study and implement to make my setup!
Would be awaiting eagerly.

Thanks for the nice words and good to now that all the information is appreciated and used.

Regarding the design that was also shared in the Twitter feed that I shared. Good luck with the DIY.

Your link gave me a 404. I would love to see the design of your antenna!
