I am very new to chasing the birds and have a lot to learn, to become a real live ground station do i have to use a Pi or can i use other software ?

Raspberry Pi is the suggested and supported platform from SatNOGS project. This means that you can run SatNOGS software in other platforms, or even run custom software that will perform observations. However the easiest way to start is with RPi.
