Expedition 73 - ARISS Series 27
A special ARISS-Russia SSTV event is on the ISS schedule beginning May 5, 2025 at 12:00 UTC. This is a celebration commemorating a regional holiday. This will impact the availability of APRS. Monitor 145.800 MHz for potential activity during passes.
The Soviet Order of the Patriotic War was awarded for “heroic deeds” during World War II.
For shooting down two aircrafts, the Order of Second Class was awarded, and for shooting down three or more aircrafts, the Order of First Class (shown here).
Behind the Order you see the ribbon of Saint George in black and orange bicolour pattern, which has been associated with Russian nationalism and militarism following the start of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Incomprehensible in this context: the ARISS logo
The primary purpose of the corporation Amateur Radio on the International Space Station is
“to provide and operate amateur radio systems on the International Space Station (ISS) and elsewere in order to inspire, educate and engage youth and communities in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics and to support ISS backup communications.
Said corporation is also organized exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes (…).”

Am I the only one who missed the war propaganda part?
The thought did cross my mind when seeing the images. I guess it is allowed under the “educate” part of the statement. I was not aware of what these images were related to until today, so I have been educated and informed.
As an Amateur radio License holder I do not believe there is a condition of our licenses (in the UK) that prohibits radio operators from discussing these subjects, but we are educated not to discuss religion & war as this is not the platform to discuss this on. We are here to learn about the hobby of amateur radio and educate ourselves on this subject.
With ARISS having a global reach is does make me question the selection process for appropriate topics to promote via the use of amateur radio. Maybe this has been made to fit with the use of radio and the role it played during the Second World War.
