Ground Station Configuration

Hi, My name is Nita

I am experiencing an issue with my SatNOGS client on a Raspberry Pi. The service keeps exiting with the error message “SATNOGS STATION ELEV not configured but required” and then it automatically attempts to restart. Here is a snippet from the journal logs:

May 20 12:46:31 raspberrypi satnogs-client [2085]: satnogsclient - ERROR - SATNOGS STATION ELEV not configured but required
May 20 12:46:31 raspberrypi satnogs-client [2085]: satnogsclient - ERROR - Settings are invalid, exiting…
May 20 12:46:31 raspberrypi systemd[1]: satnogs-client.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=255/EXCEPTION

I have checked my configuration settings but am not sure if I am setting the elevation correctly. Could someone guide me on how to properly configure the “SATNOGS STATION ELEV” parameter, and how to verify if it’s being acknowledged by the system?

Thank you for your help!

When you are running sudo satnogs-setup, go to
-Basic configuration options
-Satnogs_station_elev
click, type the altitude (only numerical, but keep in mind they are meters, not feets, or is my impression)
Dont forget to APPLY.

I have tried to change the elevation values and align them with the elevation values of the ground station that I have inputted, but it still doesn’t work. What should I do for an issue like this, sir?

HI Nita,
Check in your dashboard if you fill the altitude,

Can you copy paste here the output of the support report generated by the menu item Advanced -> Support from sudo satnogs-setup?

This way we will be sure if the elevation value is set correctly.

When I attempt to update the configuration, why does this command appear, sir?

Previously, I attempted to configure using sudo /var/lib/satnogs-config/bin/satnogs-config and it succeeded, but the data appeared to be empty. I thought the data was lost. It turns out that the data I configured in satnogs-setup is different from the data in sudo /var/lib/satnogs-config/bin/satnogs-config.

Go into Terminal and type:
cristian@yo4dft:~$ sudo satnogs-setup
[sudo] parolă pentru cristian: (you’ll be ask to type the password).

This will open the Basic configuration options / Satnogs station elev - Define station elev

Type the elevation, after that SAVE, BACK, APPLY, etc.

And please generate and post here a support information report to see what is there

last line of Advanced configuration options
on the terminal screen will appear something like…

Generating support report. Please wait…

this is the result sir

the result still like this sir

Hi Nita,

Lets wait Fredy opinion, he is the expert. I dont understand why the software doesnt validate the altitude.
As I know, same info are in dashboard and can be edit. Please check your dashboard to have same values.

The report says that you haven’t applied the latest changes in your configuration. I guess you have hit the apply button but due to some errors in your configuration values the changes haven’t been applied.

I would suggest you reset your configuration (Reset option in the main menu of sudo satnogs-setup) and you start with the necessary only (basic) configuration to get the station working and then go to change the advanced values. For the latter feel free to check both the link above and the related docs.

For example some values on your configuration that have probably cause the issue:

This has nothing to do with the station id, you should leave it with the default value

This is not a url

This should be an integer not a string, also no need to change the default except if you know what are you doing.

Some more comments on some values:

Except if you know the ppm error of your SDR device, leave it with the default value, perform some observations and if needed then you can add ppm correction.

This will not allow client to upload waterfall images to SatNOGS Network, this means that the station will upload only data if available and an audio file. If you have a bandwidth/internet issue and you can not upload big files, I suggest you disable uploading of the audio files(~10MB per observation) which is bigger file than waterfall file (~1.2 MB per observation). If you don’t have any issue with the internet then leave it with the default value.
