@KD9KCK I had a broken laptop so I could not work on it during the break. I will continue on it from this Saturday. So it will not take long to reach upstream 
There has been some progress, the new waterfall generation works in a dev environment and we make some last tests for its shape and size.
If you want to play with matplotlib and suggest your own shape and size of the waterfall download this zip file(link will be dead after 30 days), unzip it and follow instructions of README file.

Out of curiosity, why not have the waterfall start at 0 seconds from the top?
This way, when you scroll down the screen, it following in time. Currently, it’s backwards, ie scrolling down goes back in time.
I prefer the new darker colours. Much easier on the eye.
You can already use darker colors, but it needs some modification of the waterfall plotting script.

I guess because the water falls from top to bottom, so the oldest samples are at the bottom 
I too think about it sometimes that it might be better to have it reversed for a static spectrogram.
I’ve got no idea where to start/what values to use etc.

It’s easy to reverse it… it was reversed at its first version but I changed it to be compatible with the current implementation.
I still confuse which is then end and which the start… so it is +1 from me too. I agree that usually in waterfalls oldest data are on the bottom but as @csete said, for static waterfall may not make sense to be like that.

I have edited my how-to to give a start. There will be some kind of automagically adjusted waterfall ranges with the new waterfall-generation coming soon. To get a start with the current ones, please read through:

Some quick updates on this. During the fosdem hackathon there were some plan changes… So it will need a little more patience before having this ready.
