I think you definitely want the balun for transmit. I started to look for materials to build it. I think I can pickup all of the materials at Home Depot. I was considering using 1/16 instead of 1/8 for the flat rod
but that might be too flimsy. Maybe your seeing a slightly higher SWR being mounted in the attic.

This is very real possibility. There are 3 other antenna’s mounted less than 1/2 a wavelength away, as well.
