Rotator 3.1 Mounting

I’m getting ready to cut my 40mm aluminum tube for the axes. I’m wondering why the az axis has a half circle removed from the bottom end. Does anyone have pictures showing how the axis mounts to a mast or tripod? i.e. what is the purpose of the cut?

This is how we mounted ours. We found a cheap PA Speaker tripod to mount ours on to. I imagine mast mounts will be different
